When you donate, please complete the
deposit agreement form. This covers ownership, custody, access and other issues.
Your Tasmanian records can help document the history of Tasmania by becoming part of our state's archives. Normally you transfer full ownership to us, as this makes it easier to manage the records in our collection. Sometimes we accept material as an indefinite loan with agreed conditions, including paying us for storage and conservation.
We keep items in a secure location protected against fire and unauthorised access. Storage areas have temperature and humidity controls. Our conservators can restore documents in need of repair.
If you are concerned about confidentiality, we may be able to restrict public access to some records for an agreed period of time. Discuss this with staff when depositing your records
resources on preserving your own records from the National Archives of Australia.
Tasmanian publishers and writers must give us a copy of their publication. See more on
Cultural Gifts program
You can donate items of cultural significance to us via the Australian Government's
Cultural Gifts Program. Through this program you can realise tax benefits while making a contribution to Tasmania's cultural heritage.
Donate to the library
We welcome your donations to buy books or other special purposes.
Donating library items
You can give us new or used items for the library. Please give donated items to your local LINC or library for assessment. We accept items that enhance our existing collections. We assess donations according to:
- physical condition
- likely demand.
We do not accept outdated editions or items in poor condition, unless they have Tasmanian heritage value. Accepted items become part of our state-wide lending collection. Unsuitable items may be sold to fund new purchases.
Bequests of manuscripts, books, sound recordings and ephemera help our collections grow and reflect Tasmania's history and contemporary culture. We can also use bequests to improve services, collections, equipment and training to build a better future for all Tasmanians. Please consider a bequest to us in your will.
To be legally valid, wills have to comply with specific legal requirements. Use a legal service when preparing your will. Most Public Trustees and many solicitors can prepare your will free or for a small charge.
If you already have a will and would like to make a bequest, you can add a supplement to the document that sets out your instructions for a bequest.
